Course Title: Medieval Great Books – Honors
Tutor Name: Cayce Yarbrough
Course Fee: $50/month
Subject: English
Grade Level: 11 - 12
Min/Max in Class: 5 minimum
Course Description: This is theoretically the third year of the Great Books Course, although the classes can be taken in any order. On a transcript, it counts as both an English and a Social Studies credit, two credits total, at the honors level. On a four point scale, an A in an honors course garners 5 points on a 4 point scale. Students will explore Medieval and Renaissance Literature. The class will cover the literature and its historical context, using in-class Socratic discussion and at-home writing assignments to increase the student’s understanding of the role these works play in the story of Western Civilization. During the Medieval Era, life was viewed primarily through the lens of Faith, while the Renaissance saw a rebirth of interest in science and reason. The literature of each period explores the sources of many of the ideals of Western Civilization. Students will earn both an English credit and a History credit for this class. Due to the caliber of work required, this class can be considered an honors class.
Curriculum Required: Students will need to purchase some paperback books, but many materials will be provided. Preliminary Book List: Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, Malory's Morte d'Arthur , Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, The Song of Roland, Cervantes' Don Quixote, William Shakespeare's Hamlet, and many others. This is only partial information on the books that will be used next year.
Prerequisites: Students must read Dante's Inferno before the first day of class.

| Computer Courses
Course Title: Middle School Java Programming using Alice Tutor Name: Sandy Graham Course Fee: $35/month Subject: Computer Grade Level: 6 - 8 Min/Max in Class: no minimum
Course Description: Using Alice, an innovative 3D programming environment that makes it easy to create an animation for telling a story, playing an interactive game, or a video to share on the web, students will learn programming techniques and develop good programming habits. Students will also learn good problem solving and team work strategies such as reading and understanding what is requested, making a plan before beginning any work, doing that work and documenting it in a way that others can easily follow it.
Students will be required to read the chapters and to do the programming assignments embedded in the chapter readings in addition to defining terms, answering questions, writing short segments of code referred to as exercises and writing longer programs referred to as projects. Students will not be expected to spend more than one hour (one class period) per weekday completing this work (four hours per week).
Alice is not a game, but provides a way for visual learners to see what their code is doing while protecting new programmers from the headaches of syntax errors. Alice is a freely available teaching tool designed to be a student's first exposure to object-oriented programming. It allows students to learn fundamental programming concepts in the context of creating animated movies and simple video games. In Alice, 3-D objects (e.g., people, animals, and vehicles) populate a virtual world and students create a program to animate the objects.
In Alice's interactive interface, students drag and drop graphic tiles to create a program, where the instructions correspond to standard statements in a production oriented programming language, such as Java, C++, and C#. Alice allows students to immediately see how their animation programs run, enabling them to easily understand the relationship between the programming statements and the behavior of objects in their animation. By manipulating the objects in their virtual world, students gain experience with all the programming constructs typically taught in an introductory programming course.
Curriculum Required: Learning to Program with Alice, 2nd edition, by Dann, Cooper, & Pausch; ISBN-13: 978-0-13-208516-8 (I will check price with Pearson, but this year it was cheaper for each parent to just order it through Barnes & Noble.)
Prerequisites: None
Course Makeup Policy: In-class work may be made up at home. Students are responsible for getting any notes that they missed.
Course Grading Policy: Students will receive a grade based upon their work.
